hierarchical arrangement of concepts, in a thesaurus or classification scheme, in
which each concept can have only one broader concept
Compare with polyhierarchical
structure. In a monohierarchical structure, each
concept can occur at only one place in the hierarchy and
other broader term relationships have to be shown as
related term relationships.
e.g. in a monohierarchical structure, the concept
pianos cannot be listed as a narrower term of
both keyboard instruments and stringed
instruments; a choice has to be made of one of
these concepts to determine its placing.
