U.S. Government Ethics
Walter M. Shaub, Jr., director of the United States Office of Government Ethics resigned July 6, 2017 saying the rules need to be tougher. His term would have gone through January 2018. Shaub will join the Campaign Legal Center to work on ethics in government issues. “There isn’t much more I could accomplish at the Office of Government Ethics, given the current situation,” Shaub told the New York Times. “O.G.E.’s recent experiences have made it clear that the ethics program needs to be strengthened.”In his resignation letter to the President, Shaub notes that “public service is a public trust. Shaub joined OGE under the George W. Bush administration and was appointed agency head by President Barack Obama in 2013. Of Shaub’s criticisms of the current administration’s ethics practices, perhaps most notable was his position that President Donald Trump’s plan to place his business holdings in a trust to be managed by his sons rather than to divest them was insufficient. As of July 7, 2017, the Office has received 406 FOIA requests for Fiscal Year 2017.
