The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent office of program evaluation and review located within the Governor's Office of Planning & Budget (GOPB). The purpose of this office is to ensure adequate internal controls are in place and effective policies and procedures are established and followed. The Utah OIG is responsible to ensure fiscal integrity of the Utah Medicaid program while meeting the healthcare needs of the many Medicaid beneficiaries. The OIG consists of two functional areas: the Internal Audit Group and the Program Integrity Group.
The Internal Audit Group performs audits within the Department, public agencies, and private entities that receive Medicaid funds through contractual agreements with the department.
Program Integrity audits and investigates providers suspected of overbilling or defrauding the Medicaid program, recovers overpayments, and refers cases of suspected fraud for criminal investigation.

Effective July 1, 2011 the Office of Internal Audits and Program Integrity (OIA-PI) became the Office of Inspector General of Medicaid Services (OIG). OIA-PI was moved out of the Department of Health and was located in the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget as the Office of Inspector General of Medicaid Services (OIG). HB 84 Office of Inspector General of Medicaid Services creates within the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget the Office of Inspector General of Medicaid Services. The office is tasked with identifying, preventing, and reducing fraud, waste, and abuse within the Medicaid program. The office received all of the Department of Health’s FY 2011 Medicaid program integrity funding as well as an additional $819,100 total funds ($300,000 General Fund) from the Department of Health. However, the website is still under the Department of Health.
